race weekend

It’s the first weekend of May, and that means Triathlon season has started in the North East.  Naturally, being me, I got drunk about 6 months back and decided yes, I want to start my tri season 2 weeks earlier than usual.  While it’s still cold, and my training was mostly indoors… Anyways it’s Jersey Devil Triathlon weekend and we had the entirety of South NJ to hit; because we’ve never hit it before!   Zeds Beer-Bado Brewing (Marlton, NJ) I wouldn’t quite call this South NJ yet, but our first stop of the trip was Zeds Beer (Bado Brewing).  This family and dog friendly brewery in Marlton, NJ has a great floor plan with lots of seating so bring some lunch or dinner when you show up. And bring a dog; they love dogs. It’s the first brewery of the day so naturally we started off strong with a […]

South Jersey Beerventures Part 1- Central Jersey

We’re officially in fall and that means we had one last triathlon on the calendar, which actually means we had four more breweries to visit to and from the Zoot Westchester Tri in Rye.  This weekend we had Kuka (Andean) Brewing Company, Lock City Brewing, District 96 Beer Factory and Industrial Arts Brewing Company.      Kuka (Andean) Brewing Company (Blauvelt, NY) Off 287 at the Palisades mall exit (Blauvelt, NY) and in a large industrial park behind the Restaurant depot is a good sized contract brewery (Andean) that makes its own label (Kuka) in an oversized 20 barrel system.  Kuka has been in business for four years and has had a tap room for two; thanks to changes in the NYS alcohol regulations.  But they’re only open Friday and Saturday so plan accordingly.  The modest sized tap room is staffed by the owner of Kuka, who loves drinking beer […]

Westchester Triathlon and Beerventuring

So it’s becoming a slight tradition that if I tag along on one of Andrew’s race weekends, it’s gonna be a mini beerventure. Hey, I can be a supportive girlfriend sometimes. With incentives. So, because of good planning on my part, we needed to head down to West Windsor, NJ to pick up Andrew’s bib on Friday before the Sunday New Jersey State Triathlon. We decided to make the drive worth our while and visited two new breweries. Flounder Brewing Co. (Hillsborough, NJ) The first brewery we checked out was Flounder Brewing Co. This had been on my list since our first trip down this way in Jersey but it wasn’t until recently that they had consistent hours. Since we were still a half hour away from the park and it we were cutting it close timewise, we decided to split a flight of four. We ordered the Milkshake, Genevieve […]

Bib-pickup, beer tasting. Another race weekend for the beerventurers.

It’s finally day three and we’re headed off Strong Island in classic beerventurer fashion; hitting more breweries on the way home.  With a gas tank depleting, wallet almost empty and ez-pass toll expenses skyrocketing, we of course had to make the trip back worth it.  So Melissa broke out the maps and did some quick planning to maximize our bang for the buck and came up with five breweries to hit on the way home. Black Forest Brew Haus (Farmingdale, NY) Every now and again we are privileged to hit a brewery that has withstood the test of time by catering to the local populous tastes through solid suds and community involvement. Black Forest Brew Haus is one of those establishments. Founded in 1998, this German-centric brewpub offers a wide array of food from traditional items like Wiener Schnitzel to hipster and vegetarian friendly Portobello mushroom burgers. Unfortunately, we had […]

LI Beerventures Day 3

Beerventurers Take on Long Island Day 2 Continuing on from our last post, we’ve got more beer to drink and places to see while on Long Island for the weekend. Specifically breweries in Patchogue, Holbrook and Riverhead. But first Andrew needs to run 10 miles in the cold because apparently that’s a good time. I’ll stick to the beer, thank you.   Sayville Running Company 10 Mile Run to the Blue Point Brewery – Race Recap Start and Finish: Blue Point Brewery in Patchogue, NY Amenities: Long sleeve tech tee’s, finishers medal (also a bottle opener), discounts at the Sayville Running Company store, Porta-potties, heated tent, food, unlimited beer during the festival, and live music. Weather: Fucking cold, but sunny. Average Pace: 7:52.  We took the first five miles out at an ~8:50 pace and at mile 2 I had to take a quick pitstop… And I’m pretty happy with […]

Long Island Beerventures Day 2

Another weekend, another excuse to visit more breweries. At least that was why I agreed to go watch Andrew’s race the Survival of the Mills, a seven stage triathlon in south jersey. Screamin’ Hill Brewery (Cream Ridge, NJ) Our first stop was at Screamin’ Hill Brewery in Cream Ridge NJ; a true farm brewery in a barn.   This family oriented, space was packed to the brim with patrons both inside and out.  Maybe it was the pumpkin patch and apple orchards, or quite possibly it was the beer.  Even the seasonably crappy weather wasn’t enough to deter this large, rambunctious crowd.    The beer: Chocolate porter, Barn Burnin’ Ale, Rye Bullock IPA and Pumpkin Pickin’ Ale.  The first three beers were average and there wasn’t much to discuss.  The Rye Bullock was a little under-ryed in my opinion, but still a solid beer.  The Pumpkin Pickin’ Ale on the […]
