Winter Classic at Two Roads

We’re always looking for excuses to mix friends with beerventures so when we saw Two Roads was hosting a Winter Classic we were intrigued. Per the event description, there was going to be two new beers, an ice bar, ice sculptures, fire pits, live music and a curling exhibition. The curling is really what sealed the deal, because who doesn’t love curling? And for $10 including the first beer, it wasn’t a bad deal.

So this week has been unseasonably warm in Connecticut, which is a stark contrast from last week’s polar vortex. We got the heartbreaking email that the bocce court wouldn’t freeze so there would be no curling. 🙁

So Saturday came and we headed over to Stratford, where I realized I forgot my tickets but we were still good to go. The Winter Classic was held in the Hop Yard next to the brewery. With all the snow melted, the ground turned to mud pretty quickly. Good thing we all wore our old boots. And by we I mean the girls. We got to the ice bar to try the Espressway Cold Brew Coffee Stout and the  Route of All Evil with Ghost Peppers. Andrew got the coffee stout while I headed over to the other bar to grab Henry’s Farm Double Bock.

We played a couple games of corn hole (terribly, I might add) before the bean bags we completely covered in mud. After that we went to watch the ice sculpture demo and wondered how you discover that talent. I’m not allowed to touch power tools, so I don’t know if I have untapped potential as an ice sculptor. Some our also tried out our hockey skills in which Hildawg wins most enthusiastic, winning a coveted sticker! We finally settled by the large fire pit where we ate burritos from the Green Grunion food truck which were muy delish but Andrew thought it could have had a bit more kick.

We decided rather than spending $6 each on more pints, we would head back to my house and had a little bottle share courtesy of Andrew and Bryan. We watched Galaxy Quest and tried to keep up with a drinking game which kind of failed. When people realized they were hungry, we had the great idea to go to Mac n Out. This is probably my favorite place because I love mac n cheese. The best dish there is the santa fe, which is basically like taco mac n cheese, but we try to get one of the monthly specials as well. Don’t be deceived, the mini is big enough for a normal human! Our other dish was the Heartbreaker, a pulled pork mac n cheese. Still no santa fe, but delicious on its own.

From there we went to Total Wines and More, and everyone felt like a kid in a candy store. We had to limit ourselves, but we made our way back to our house to continue our netflix and drink. The rest of our movies were Starship Trooper, From Dusk til Dawn, Mulan and Hercules. We also may have ordered a pizza for good measure. Everyone had a good time, the boys got to bro out while the girls watched disney, and everyone made it home safe!
And the next morning we went to see Deadpool which was special in all the best ways! Another successful weekend in the books!
