“Please Pass the Powdered Beer.”

Please Pass the Powdered Beer

Powdered alcohol is not a new concept. It’s so old in fact that it has been nearly a decade since concerned “activists” rallied against the potential creation of powdered vodka; which they had promptly banned in the state of New York. Classic NY move. Flash forward to 2023, and some brilliant German engineer had their priorities are straight. We’ve made it people; we can finally say “please pass the powdered beer.”

Neuzeller Klosterbräu, a Germany brewery founded in 1589, has invented a powdered lager. According to the brewery, this powdered lager will not only revolutionize the way
we drink beer but it is environmentally friendly as well. Currently, the Neuzeller lager is still wrapping up the R&D phase, but they promise to be in market by the end of 2023. However, this generation of powdered beer is alcohol-free… But they will have a boozy version soon, or so they promise.

Coming as no shock to you, beer is a $600 billion dollar industry globally. About $18 billion of that is derived from exports. While 3% doesn’t seem like a whole lot, imagine what $18 billion dollars of beer bottles, cans and kegs looks like. Now imagine those bottles, cans and kegs flying, sailing, and driving around the world. There is a very large carbon footprint dedicated to delivery of our favorite carbonated beverage. With a powdered beer, we can significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with transporting and storing our favorite brews. Powdered beer, at least in theory, should be much lighter and compact than kegs, bottles and cans filled with mostly water. Also consider that that several individuals, communities and entire countries don’t recycle. Not only can we transport beer more efficiently, but we will also reduce waste that hits the oceans or ends up in landfills.
